Cicada Spotlight: Ali Stokes

Written by Evelyn Homin | 23 March 2022

One of the highlights of delivering commercialisation programs at Cicada is getting to work with so many passionate and visionary entrepreneurs. Last year, one of these entrepreneurs, Ali Stokes completed Cicada Medlab Commercialisation 101, and we sat down with her today to find out how she’s progressed since then. Ali shared her story behind founding Beyond the Clinic - a health tech startup that helps doctors and patients communicate efficiently and her bold goals for 2022.

"A patient engages with multiple clinicians throughout an episode of care and often receives disjointed information, ...It was observing the frustration of clinicians and patients alike that led my co-founder and I to build a solution"

Tell us about your vision for Beyond the Clinic

Our vision at Beyond the Clinic is to change they way we provide healthcare through the use of digital communication tools.

You’ve worn many hats working in healthcare, including business development, nursing, education, and more. Can you tell us the defining moment that led you to founding Beyond the Clinic?

Having worked across a variety of healthcare roles, I was frustrated by the limited influence I had on patient outcomes within my individual roles. A patient engages with multiple clinicians throughout an episode of care and often receives disjointed information, leaving them feeling rushed and confused through the surgical process. And for clinicians, long patient clinics result in rushed consults with only basic information being discussed.  It was observing the frustration of clinicians and patients alike that led my co-founder and I to build a solution - Beyond The Clinic.

You recently participated in the Cicada Medlab: Commercialisation 101 program, how did it help you on your journey with Beyond the Clinic?

The Cicada Medlab: Commercialisation 101 program was a valuable 2 day program with qualified health tech and business leaders. They prompt companies to really consider how to navigate around the complex environment of healthcare. It helped Beyond The Clinic develop our roadmap for commercialisation.

What are your goals for Beyond the Clinic this year, and how can our community help?

This year for Beyond The Clinic is Trial, Traction, Team! - we are building a fantastic team who are passionate about enhancing patient care and delivering clinical efficiency. We have an MVP in trial and we are looking to recruit our early adopter group by middle of the year. We would like the opportunity to participate in the NSW Health Commercialisation Training Program to take a deeper dive into how we can revolutionise the way we provide healthcare.
